We designed The Studio as a child-led space where students had the freedom to explore their individual creative voices. The children could work one-on-one or in small groups with us on personalised projects that followed their specific interests and inclinations.
The desire to explore this model came from our experience that group art projects often exclude children who are restricted and stifled by traditional parameters. This residency was a rare opportunity in which we had time and space to be curious to their creative worlds and discover interests and abilities that may otherwise go unnoticed.
Our approach establishes a safe, open, fully accepting space as fertile ground for creative expression. We are careful to observe the nuances of access needs, communication styles and preferences. And from this relational and emergent foundation we gradually introduce new materials, scales, and ideas that are tailored to the individual. We use high quality materials that encourage engagement and honour the children's creations.
Together we seek and find art in all places and moments of expression.
Thank you to Regional Arts Victoria and the staff and students of Port Phillip Specialist School, Melbourne, Australia.
We acknowledge the Boon Wurrung people of the Kulin Nation, Traditional Custodians of the land where upon this residency unfolded.
